Snorkel Keepers and Clips: Which Mask-Snorkel Holder Works Best
Snorkel keepers compared — figure-eight clips, silicone loops, magnetic holders and integrated designs — plus how to fit each type correctly.

The small clip that attaches your snorkel to your mask strap is easy to ignore — until it fails in a swell and the snorkel disappears behind you. Keepers come in a few designs, each with real trade-offs.
Figure-Eight Clips
The classic plastic figure-eight slides over the mask strap and the snorkel barrel. They are cheap and universally fitted, but hard plastic fatigues over seasons and can crack without warning. Carry a spare in the gear bag.
Silicone Loop Keepers
Soft silicone versions grip better and survive packing. They stretch over the strap and hold the snorkel with friction, so positioning is easy to adjust one-handed at the surface.

Magnetic Holders
Two magnets — one on the mask strap, one on the snorkel — click together. They make removing the snorkel for swimming laps effortless and are popular with freedivers who drop the snorkel before descending. Salt and sand can eventually weaken the grip; rinse after use.
Integrated Designs
Some snorkels mold a soft tab directly into the tube, and some masks include a keeper pocket on the strap. These reduce loose parts and are standard on our own sets — see how they fit in the beginner snorkel set guide.
Fitting Rules
Fit the snorkel on the left side — traditional, and it clears most standard designs. The top of the snorkel should sit just above the crown of the head when the face is in the water, so the mouthpiece does not pull down on your jaw. A pulled jaw is a common cause of jaw fatigue described in our mouthpiece guide.
